Day 1 | Arrive in Mumbai

Land in Mumbai and let the city come to you slowly. Your host meets you at the aircraft door, walks you through fast-track formalities, and within the hour you are settled at the Taj Mahal Palace, watching wooden fishing boats bob in the harbour below the Gateway of India. There is nothing on the schedule tonight. That is deliberate.

MUMBAICOCHINALLEPPEYKUMARAKOMMUNNAR
LodgingThe Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai (Sea Facing Palace Suite)

Mumbai is a city of remarkable contrasts — historic architecture beside soaring glass, centuries-old street trades running under film billboards. Give yourself the first evening simply to watch it move. The palace wing's corridors, hung with original art, are a museum in themselves.

Day 2 | Mumbai

South Mumbai holds the world's second-largest collection of Art Deco buildings, and they stand face to face with High Victorian Gothic across the Oval Maidan. Walk the UNESCO-listed ensemble with a conservation architect: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in full flight, the Kala Ghoda art district, the Gateway of India, and the lanes of Crawford Market where the fruit sellers have held the same pitches for generations.

From bustling streets and a thriving art scene to a celebrated culinary culture, this is the day Mumbai's layers come apart in your hands — colonial, Deco, modern — and reassemble as one city.

Day 3 | Mumbai

Cross the harbour by boat to the Elephanta Caves, where an eighteen-foot three-faced Shiva has watched the water for fourteen centuries. 📍 Cochin

Day 4 | Mumbai - Cochin

A morning flight trades Mumbai's scale for Kochi's stillness. Your boutique hotel is a converted Victorian shipyard on the harbour's edge, where dredgers and container ships slide past the lawn. Spend the late afternoon on the Fort Kochi waterfront — Portuguese and Dutch facades, art cafés in spice godowns, and the first sight of the Chinese fishing nets against the Arabian Sea.

Meal OptionsFresh seafood dinner on the Fort Kochi waterfront

Kochi is a meeting point of civilisations — Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British influence is legible in its architecture, its food, even the rhythm of its streets. Fort Kochi keeps a slow coastal pace that mainland Ernakulam gave up decades ago; you are staying on the right side of the water.

📍 Cochin

Day 5 | Cochin

Be at the Chinese fishing nets for sunrise, when the fishermen lower the great cantilevered frames into slack water and the light does the rest. Then work inland through Mattancherry: the Dutch Palace with its Ramayana murals, the Paradesi Synagogue in the old Jewish quarter, and spice warehouses where ginger and cardamom are still sorted by hand on the floor.

The spice trade built every wall you will walk past today. Mattancherry's warehouses have worked continuously for centuries, and today the district doubles as a creative hub — heritage on the ground floor, galleries above.

📍 Alleppey

The afternoon unspools along Vembanad Lake and its canal network: rice paddies below water level, children waving from school ferries, herons statue-still on the banks. Dinner is cooked on board and eaten as the sun drops behind the palms.

Meal OptionsKerala Sadya served on board · Fresh backwater seafood

Alleppey is shaped by its intimate relationship with water. The backwaters are not a spectacle laid on for visitors — they are a working transport network of ferries, canoes and barges, threaded through a rice-growing landscape that has adapted to tidal water for centuries. The experience is less about sightseeing than about letting the pace of the water reset your own.

📍 Kumarakom

Day 7 | Alleppey - Kumarakom

Wake on the water, breakfast on deck, and disembark at Kumarakom on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake. Your villa at the lake resort sits behind a traditional wooden facade rescued from old Kerala homes. The afternoon asks nothing of you: village paths through the paddy fields, a canoe on the canals, or the infinity pool that appears to pour into the lake itself.

Meal OptionsFresh lake fish in coconut and spice gravy · Lakeside Kerala fine dining

Kumarakom is defined by its relationship with Vembanad, India's largest backwater system — a mosaic of canals, paddies and small islands where life moves at a water-bound rhythm. Farming and fishing shaped it; refined lakeside retreats have joined them without displacing either.

The curator's advisory, daily highlights and optional experiences for this day are shared privately — tap Hidden Gems above.

📍 Kumarakom

Day 8 | Kumarakom

Dawn belongs to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, when the wetlands are loudest — egrets, herons, darters, and in season the Siberian migrants that turn the mangroves into an aviary. The rest of the day slows deliberately: a rejuvenating Ayurvedic treatment at the resort's lakeside spa, designed around your constitution by the resident physician.

MUMBAICOCHINALLEPPEYKUMARAKOMMUNNAR
Meal OptionsTraditional Kerala Sadya with lakeside views

The sanctuary turns migratory in the winter months, when Siberian species join the resident cormorants and kingfishers. Ayurveda here is not a spa flourish — Kerala's physician lineages go back generations, and a proper consultation precedes any treatment.

📍 Munnar

Day 9 | Kumarakom - Munnar

The road to Munnar climbs four thousand feet through rubber, cardamom and finally tea — hairpin after hairpin of it, each turn greener than the last. By afternoon you are walking estate paths between clipped tea bushes, with mist drifting across the valleys the way it has since the British planted these slopes. Evenings up here are cool enough for a fireplace.

📍 Munnar

Day 10 | Munnar

Inside a working tea factory the day's pluck is withering in long troughs, and the air is thick with the smell of it — you follow the leaf from trough to roller to the final sort. 📍 Cochin

Day 11 | Munnar - Cochin airport

One last hill breakfast before the descent — the same four thousand feet, unwinding in reverse, tea giving way to cardamom and rubber and finally the coastal plain. Your chauffeur delivers you to Cochin International Airport with time in hand, and the Malabar Passage closes where Kerala began for you: at the edge of the water.
