Ooty

The blue mountains — toy train, tea estates and a colonial hill station in the clouds.

Ooty was the summer capital the British built in the Nilgiris, and its bones remain intact: botanical gardens, a boating lake, winding leisure roads, and the UNESCO-listed toy train hauling itself up the gradients since 1908 — slow on purpose, which is the entire point.

Around the town, tea estates patchwork the slopes, and the indigenous Toda people's grasslands hold an older story than the Raj's.

Curator's Advisory

Weather changes its mind quickly — carry a warm layer under blue sky. Take the train's first departure and Doddabetta before the haze builds.
