Mahabalipuram

Stone memory — Pallava temples carved from living granite, facing the open Bay of Bengal.

Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO-listed seaside town where the Pallava dynasty carved a city's worth of monuments out of granite thirteen centuries ago. The Shore Temple takes the sea wind head-on as it has since the eighth century; Arjuna's Penance crowds gods, elephants and ascetics onto a whale-sized bas-relief.

Nothing here was assembled — everything was revealed, cut from the living rock. The chisels still ringing in the village workshops belong to the same unbroken trade.

Curator's Advisory

Early morning and late afternoon for the monuments — the granite reflects hard midday sun. A guide earns their fee at Arjuna's Penance; the relief is a library.
